After the Worldwide Developer Conference Keynote today, Apple previewed OS 10.6 “Snow Leopard.” True to rumors, the release will focus on performance rather than new features.

“We have delivered more than a thousand new features to OS X in just seven years and Snow Leopard lays the foundation for thousands more,” said Bertrand Serlet, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. “In our continued effort to deliver the best user experience, we hit the pause button on new features to focus on perfecting the world’s most advanced operating system.”

A new technology called “Grand Central” will make it easy for developers to create programs that take full advantage of the power of multi-core Macs. Also introduced is Open Computing Language (OpenCL), which extends the computing power of the GPU to any application written with OpenCL commands. Snow Leopard will also raise the software limit for RAM to 16 TB.

Also introduced is Quicktime X, which “optimizes support for modern audio and video formats resulting in extremely efficient media playback.” Safari will also be receiving an optimized Javascript rendering engine (previously rumored) that will increase performance by 53%.

Beyond speed enhancements, Snow Leopard will also include out-of-the-box support for Microsoft Exchange 2007. Apple is aiming for the software to ship in “about a year.”

Other announcements made at WWDC include 3G iPhone, 2.0 Firmware, SDK, Mobile Me.

  1. Find the screen sharing application and put it in the dock for future convenience. It is found at /System/Library/CoreServices/Screen Sharing.app
  2. Type this into terminal (it allows you to see networked computers that can be controlled):
    defaults write com.apple.ScreenSharing ShowBonjourBrowser_Debug 1
  3. Now, to add lots of buttons that are also found in Apple Remote Desktop, type this as one line into terminal:
    defaults write com.apple.ScreenSharing \
'NSToolbar Configuration ControlToolbar' -dict-add 'TB Item Identifiers' \
    '(Scale,Control,Share,Curtain,Capture,FullScreen,
    GetClipboard,SendClipboard,Quality)'

  4. Now restart screen sharing to see the buttons

I was just fooling around with the menubar in Finder when I found that if you press the ‘option’ key you get some different options. Try it. Click on the Apple (top left) to show the menu, then press “option”. Notice some items change? Try it on the other menu’s (file, edit, etc).

One cool trick, if you click the apple menu, then press option you will notice the dots disappear from some items. If you click the ’shutdown’ menu item the machine will shutdown without that pesky confirmation message. Neat!

I found this widget called “CharacterPal”, it has an option that lets you drag the widget to the desktop. All you have to do is start dragging the widget as you press F12. The good thing is that once the option is enabled you don’t need to keep “CharacterPal” open in the dashboard, so you can close it an still drag your favorite widget to the desktop. Hope this is helpful, enjoy!

I don’t know whether this trick has already been mentioned:
In the Finder, in List view, you can navigate using the up/down arrow keys. Now that’s well known. If the selection highlights a folder, pressing the right arrow key expands the folder (same as clicking on the “open” triangle symbol on the left side of the folders name).

Pressing the left arrow key collapses the folder again. If the selection highlights a document in an expanded folder, pressing the left arrow key moves the selection up to the containing folder, which then can be collapsed by pressing the left arrow key a 2nd time.

If you hold down command while clicking on bookmarks in the bookmarks bar it will open the link in a new tab. This also works in ‘Show all bookmarks’ by double clicking while holding down the command key.
