Also, holding down option (alt) and pressing F3 opens system preferences in the "Exposé and Spaces" section. By the way: that works for some more function keys. Hold down option and press F1/F2 to get to the Displays section of System Preferences, option + F3/F4 for Exposé and Spaces, or Option + F10/F11/F12 for the Sound section is System Preferences.
