I don’t consider myself very hip on mac tricks/haxies yet the ones I have been ready are straight from the Apple web page… here are a few terminal commands I use so often I never forget them. I’d love to know some more:
1. defaults write com.apple.Dock showhidden -bool YES (Makes hidden applications’ dock icons translucent. NO to reverse.)
2. killall (example “killall Dock”) basic… quick dock/dashboard reset
3. defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode YES (unlocks dashboard dev mode.NO to reverse.)
4. defaults write com.apple.dock mouse-over-hilte-stack -boolean YES (highlight cursor in stacks)
5. defaults write com.apple.Dock workspaces-auto-swoosh -bool NO (disabled space switching for command-tab…YES to undo as with others)

You can easily and safely access all these features (and more) in a GUI with numerous programs, my favorite being Onyx: http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs/english.html

i almost downloaded that program until i went to their forum and found out how everyone’s data was erased and not retrievable…
it’s one of the bad tools out there for the mac users.

@seokone:
I’ve used Onyx with no problems. Onyx gives you CLEAR instructions as what to mess with, and what to mess with at your OWN RISK.
Personally what I love is an app called ‘Secrets’. It basically installs into your System Preferences and handles all these terminal commands via GUI & checkboxes.
ABSOLUTE, “MUST HAVE” app in my humble opinion!!

These don’t work with me. What’s up?

you must restart/log out or “killall Dock” after to see the changes after many of these…

I had a typo in my original post. I meant that I’ve been ‘reading’ (not ready) these posts since 9A466 or whenever the sight launched and they’ve been very basic. Most of these “tricks” you can find in the information that comes w/ your computer…or by a simple search of third party apps on macosxfreeware.com
I was trying to open up the floor for other people (hopefully more knowledgeable than myself) to discuss real haxies/hacks.
For example, has anyone had any success running multiple instances of the integrated OS X Dock? I’ve heard it’s bound to a specific port which prevents this but I’m not sure if anyone’s ever gotten around the issue.

When I say that they don’t work, what I mean is that terminal displays a message saying that it doesn’t recognize the commands.

Katy, you typed the command (example: “defaults write com.apple.Dock showhidden -bool YES”) and then you restarted/logged out/entered “killall Dock” and you noticed no changes?? I’m not sure why. I Just tested it again with 10.5.2…worked for me on tiger as well of course.
[you can copy and paste from my example with out the “)

Have you ever noticed that the iCal icon shows you the actual date?

Onyx is great, no problems for me

okay, I give up. You guys can use Onyx and other 3rd party apps when they come out….I’m still interested in Terminal Commands and other Haxies I don’t know about. never mind.

Well if you type:
emacs
and hit enter you will enter the “emacs” thing. Then by pressing esc-X and typing “snake” or “tetris” or “pong” you can play those games. esc-X “yow” used to give a random little sentence but I don’t think that still works in Leopard.

That kicks ass! I’ve never seen that before… thanx
