So you may already know this but I stumbled on this by accident.  Anyway if you want to switch between windows in the same program (documents in Pages for example) then you can hold the command key and hit the `~ key (the one above the tab) and that will change the window but not the program.  I find it very helpful.

You can also cycle back and forth between application windows via command + (greater and less than).

  3. Emil Johansen Says:

The board ate the signs so here goes textually: Command + greater than or command + less than.

I can’t find the mentioned key (the one above the tab) needed for this trick…
Above the tab I have \ . If I press command + \ nothing happens. Where do i do somenthing wrong?

In fact, on the hungarian keyboard it is Command + í which key is right next to the right Shift key which I find even more comfortable :-)

  6. treffhetes Says:

Sorry. I mean that the í key is right next to the LEFT shift key.

  7. dave Says:

does someone know where that key is for the german keyboard? because neither (cmd + greater than and cmd+key above tab) works for me

  9. dani Says:

german keyboard must be equal to the portuguese keyboard. doesn’t work here also

  10. clasku Says:

If you’re using a keyboard different from the english one, you can cycle through windows in an application pressing command+option+\ (the key above the tab). I discover it right now :D

This is why I love this site. Awesome.

  12. alex Says:

ahm thank oyu clasku, but command+option+\ (the key above the tab) doesn’t work either… I just can’t believe that there is no combination for the german keyboard layout :/

This has been in OS X since the beginning. It’s a very useful tip.

You can reverse the cycle if you hold down shift at the same time:
    shift-cmd-`
Just as you can with cmd-tab to cycle through open applications and shift-cmd-tab to reverse the cycle.

  15. dani Says:

still doesn’t work here either :(

  16. bummer Says:

    doesnt work for me either

  17. treffhetes Says:

If it doesn’t work you can check the shortcut in the System Preference/Keyboard/Keyboard Shortcuts list. This functionality is ‘Move focus to next window in active application’

  18. alex Says:

    thank you treffhetes!
that worked for me.. so for you german keyboard layouters out there, the german shortcut ist “shift-cmd-`” `=left button to delete button

Why did they change this shortcut when releasing Leopard!?
In Tiger i just used cmd+< – nice and simple shortcut.

    I’m on a danish keyboard – now i have to use three buttons shift+cmd+´- sucks :o )

In portuguese keyboard it works with Command(apple key) + Ctrl + .
In Tiger it used to work with just Coomand + .
If anyone knows how to change it please share.

  23. João José Says:

In portuguese keyboard it works with Command(apple key) + Ctrl + “less than” or “greater than” keys.
In Tiger it used to work with just Coomand + “less than” or “greater than” keys.
If anyone knows how to change it please share.

  24. Thomas L Says:

The setting is possible to change using System Preferences – Keyboard & Mouse – Keyboard Shortcuts – Move focus to next window in active application.

    Hope this helps.
