The Way The Dock Was Supposed To Be Quick Save as… names
Dec 21

This isn’t really a “tip” or “trick,” but since it applies to numerous entries posted here, it is of valuable note: Macenstein and Macdailynews.com are reporting a rumor that will hopefully put to rest all of the complaints about Stacks since Leopard’s release.

According to those sources, the soon to be released major update of Leopard (10.5.2) will bring back hierarchical browsing to the Dock. The hierarchical view (referred to as “list” view) will be added to the view options of “fan,” “grid” and “automatic.”

In addition, there will apparently be a preference added to Stacks that will allow users to display them as simple folders instead of the rather unappealing “stack of icons” default view currently available.

Please note that these may only be rumors at the moment, so you would do well to hold off on celebrations. For more information–and screenshots–visit MacDailyNews.com.

Actually this is confirmed, 10.5.2 has already been seeded to developers, and these fixes/features are present.

    Thanks Apple.

Simple fix: create a folder called Stacks, create category folders such as Office Stack, Graphics Stack, etc, then put alias/shortcuts to your apps in these folders. Even put shortcuts of the folder as “00″ to keep the custom icon along with a shortcut to the Application folder as “01″.

Thanks Randy–those have actually already been suggested several times on this site, but input is always welcome. The news here is that we won’t have to use “fixes” and “workarounds” to get what we want as soon as 10.5.2 comes out!

I think the point was that the initial problem was that there was no contextual browsing from the dock in Leopard. The suggestion of alias folders in stacks–while very cool–does not bring contextual browsing back to the dock.

10.5.2 WILL bring contextual browsing back to our docks, and that’s good news for us Mac users! :)

I think I can honestly say that stacks is one of the most memorable GUI guffaws Apple has had in years. Next time, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! :)
