Anne,

MF's reply (#5) worked perfectly for me when I had this problem. Hold down the Apple key, click and drag the unwanted icon entirely out of the finder window, then release and watch it go "poof."

Well -- I have the REVERSE PROBLEM AND I NEED HELP!!! I must be accidentally dragging folders and appications willy nilly around my desktop as I draw with my Macom stylus. . . . because about 8 different files have wound up stuck up there in the Finder window bar. It wasn't intentional and I hate having them there because I end up touching them accidentally and they spring open -- SO AGGRAVATING!!! One is a huge, huge file that takes FOREVER to load and pressing ESCAPE doesn't help. Hafta wait until it's loaded and then quit. HOW DO I GET STUFF OUT OF THAT BAR???? Thank you so much anyone who can help.

Jose, the thing is, I deleted the WD application from the HD and the external is erased to Mac. I am left with the icon parked up there. Is there another route?

Tom,

It's easy. Just install the application (Anywhere Backup), the in the very first preferences Window, select (Hide the Status in the System's Menu Bar...). Then, delete the WD Anywhere application.

That 'smilely' WD icon is affecting me too - Mike, I am not able to drag out the icon in Customize Toolbar mode, although I deleted the WD application. Any explanation? Cheers

It's actually quite easy: first, in the Finder, select View > Customize Toolbar. This will bring down a palette of tools you can add or remove, such as Get Info, dividers, flexible spaces, etc. You are now free to drag any icon out of (or in to) the window toolbar.

What is really cool -- but not at all obvious -- is that when you are in this "customize toolbar" mode, you can drag any icon from anywhere -- Desktop, Apps folder, etc. -- into or out of the window toolbar. This has been around for quite some time, and it seems more intuitive than using the Apple key to do it. Have fun!

I bought a new Western Digital (WD) external FireWire HD and now I have a "WD" icon on my Finder bar. I can't seem to find a way to remove it. I tried holding down the -key and dragging out the icon but that did not work. I've gone to system preferences and can't find anything there about my WD HD. How do I get ride of the blasted WD icon?
