I don`t know if it was mentioned before, but you can easily place a program icon into the finders bar by dragging it to the place where you want it. I hope it helped.

Are you talking about the dock?

  2. PatentBoy Says:

I have never heard of the “Finder’s bar”. The Finder menu cannot be manipulated as easy as you state. I believe you may be talking about the Dock, as Corey suggests.

  3. JK Says:

No, I guess what is meant here is that you can drag Finder items (including, but not limited to, applications) into the toolbar of the regular Finder window.

Old trick, but apparently not widely known…

  4. MH Says:

Well, and how can I remove Finder items back from the toolbar?

  5. MF Says:

You can remove items from the Finder bar by holding down the -key and dragging out the icon.

  6. PatentBoy Says:

@ JK - Yes, that makes since, and it is a good hint which I have forgotten as well. : )

I bought a new Western Digital (WD) external FireWire HD and now I have a “WD” icon on my Finder bar. I can’t seem to find a way to remove it. I tried holding down the -key and dragging out the icon but that did not work. I’ve gone to system preferences and can’t find anything there about my WD HD. How do I get ride of the blasted WD icon?

It’s actually quite easy: first, in the Finder, select View > Customize Toolbar. This will bring down a palette of tools you can add or remove, such as Get Info, dividers, flexible spaces, etc. You are now free to drag any icon out of (or in to) the window toolbar.

What is really cool — but not at all obvious — is that when you are in this “customize toolbar” mode, you can drag any icon from anywhere — Desktop, Apps folder, etc. — into or out of the window toolbar. This has been around for quite some time, and it seems more intuitive than using the Apple key to do it. Have fun!

That ’smilely’ WD icon is affecting me too - Mike, I am not able to drag out the icon in Customize Toolbar mode, although I deleted the WD application. Any explanation? Cheers

  10. Jose Says:

    Tom,

It’s easy. Just install the application (Anywhere Backup), the in the very first preferences Window, select (Hide the Status in the System’s Menu Bar…). Then, delete the WD Anywhere application.

  11. Tommy Peters Says:

Jose, the thing is, I deleted the WD application from the HD and the external is erased to Mac. I am left with the icon parked up there. Is there another route?
