Here’s another neat Photobooth trick.

Take a “4-up” picture (which takes four pics one after the other like burst mode, as described in a previous post). then select the picture in the selector at the bottom of Photobooth. Then go File -> Export. choose a “filename.gif” and hit OK. The 4-frame burst photo will export as an animated gif which you can use as your iChat avatar, or on a web page! neat. Apparently this also works with video files in Photobooth, however I’ve not had much luck with it working. Perhaps someone can help with that one…

or use the Buddy Picture button in the lower right of Leopard’s PhotoBooth window. This button appears when you click one of your pics in the film strip at the bottom of the PhotoBooth window.

I find that Preview will not open animated GIFs.
If you Export the file as previously stated and then open it in Xee or some other image viewer, it works!

…or drag and drop the GIF into safari for preview ;-)

    Yep it works!

However, files are big (500kb +)
Most sites require small files for avatars.
Anyone know how to make them smaller, and still work?

  8. Greg Says:

Can you use this in iWeb?

  9. James Says:

I don’t see why you couldn’t put them into iWeb! I haven’t tried it. It may not animate when placing it in iWeb but it certainly will when displayed in a web browser.

  10. Greg Gillespie Says:

If you want to export the video file, not as an animated GIF but as a video, just do this:

    1. Drag the movie thumbnail to Safari

    2. This will play the quicktime movie in your browser

    3. IF you have Quicktime Pro, you will have the ability to “Save As Source…” option in the movie menu on the bottom right of the play controls

    Worked for me!

Now it is off to Youtube. Thanks Yzerman for Safair idea ; )

  11. What's the frequency, Kenneth? Says:

I’ve found that the animated GIF feature consistently doesn’t work with movies. Sometimes it works fine. Other times it fails to produce a file. It’s frustrating.

I don’t have any problem opening GIFs in Preview, though.
