To get a non-translucent menu bar like in Tiger, go to system preferences and click on Desktop and screen saver. Then click on the desktop tab, and finally down at the bottom there is a check box where you can uncheck “Translucent Menu Bar”.

…but not with iBook. Still translucent menu bar, I can only change it with command in Terminal.app, so it’s no reason for disabling this option.

I’m running Leopard on an iBook but my desktop/screensaver tab doesn’t show that option at all.
