I hope everyone doesn’t already know this one. Quarkomatic mentioned that you can move the Finder’s title icon around and do all kinds of things with it. Did you know that you can do the reverse with the Finder button bar just below it?
You can take a file and add it to the buttons in the button bar, and click on it to open it. If you put a folder there, Finder will go there, or you can put things in it without having to open another Finder window. You can do the same thing with applications, but what’s really neat is if you want to open a file in different applications, instead of going through menus, you can just drag it to whichever of your application buttons you want to open in!

This is by far the best tip you have posted. This is the kind of thing that has been sitting right in front of my face the whole time that I never knew existed! Thanks!

I don’t understand your explanation very well and I think I’m not the only one. You should try using more specifiek words and explaining what ‘menus or title bar or buttons’ means?
Just trying to help, keep up the nice work.

What are trying to say??? Very confusing tip. ????

How is this confusing? There’s a bar across the top of each Finder window, if you drag a file, folder, or application to it, it stays there for quick access. This has been around since 10.2 I think, perhaps as early as 10.0.

well well, every body is partially right… the title bar, or top fraction of the window is not the one this tip refers to, but to the second top fraction of the window called Toolbar…
so all actions related to this tip are reffered to the area / stripe below the title where the back/forward arrows on the left and the spotlight on the right are sitting (Toolbar)… in this area you can drop files, apps, etc…
I’m new to OS X… so I’m learning a lot from these tips…

I understand the geography in this tip, but I’m not able to make it work. Dragging a folder to the toolbar is doing nothing for me. What am I missing about how to lodge it there?

Maria, when you drag the file or folder icon to the toolbar, hold it there for a second or two. Then you’ll be able to drop it there.

I have been using OS X since it came out and never knew about this finder window trick. Thanks.

How do you remove the file or folder once it is up in the toolbar? I put something up there just for a test and now I can’t get it down.
thanks,

Kareyd, to remove it, you can secondary click on the item (or control and click), and choose “Remove Item”.
Sorry if my post was confusing to anyone, I guess I just saw it and had to comment!

Good tip, but as stated, this isn’t Leopard specific.
