There’s a fast way to edit the title of an event in iCal without having the “pop up” window effect.
Just option-click on the event title whilst in iCal and watch as it highlights allowing you to change the event title without the event window popping up.

Doen’t work for me. I cannot change anything. Only when I click edit.
