Make your mac stand out from the rest by customizing your log in screen!

Grab your favorite background image, save it as ‘background.jpg’ and execute the following from Terminal:

sudo cp background.jpg /System/Library/CoreServices/DefaultDesktop.jpg

(you need to be in the same directory as the background.jpg for the copy to work. Eg if it’s on your desktop then “cd ~/Desktop” to change to that directory first)

There’s also a programma that can do this. Just type in your password and the login background picture will be the same as your desktop picture.
It’s called “Desktop 2 Login” and can be found here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/icons_screensavers/desktop2login.html
    Did I mention it’s freeware ?

And as mac sais, the background image is really cool. Where did you find it ?

More clear is change it in plist (in czech, but terminal command is easy – you can choose any pic from /Library/Desktop Pictures/ only using by drag and drop to terminal’s command

How do I change the login background to defualt?

  8. Anonymous Says:

Just set the default desktop back as your background and start the app again.

  9. Michael Says:

Just out of curiosity, instead of entering the terminal command, couldn’t you just go to System/Library/CoreServices/ and replace the current jpg with the picture you want, just name it DefaultDesktop.jpg?

  10. Connor Says:

You can also navigate to that folder in the Finder and replace the default background.jpg with your own equivalently named picture. No teminal required. (BTW I have done this before)

I don’t understand how to make a picture saved on the desktop, my login screen photo. If someone can show me the process step by step, it would be awesome.

    thanks!

  14. Alex Says:

I can’t get it to work. I did it once with a photo, it didn’t come out right and now it won’t work anymore. I have tried every mod I can find online including just going straight to the folder and nothing will work. It is like my background image is permanently blue! Ugh.

@ Alex: See post 5. That freeware, app sets your desktop picture as your login background. So the only thing to do is change your desktop picture, and start the app. Fill in your password and you’re there !

    Greetings

  16. Alex Says:

But what if I want my desktop background to be different than my login? Or if I change desktop will login not change?

  17. Anonymous Says:

No, it will change one time, but then you can set your desktop picture back again, and then don’t use the app anymore, and you’ll have two backgrounds !

    Greetings
