Again, the "display as" option you're talking about did not exist when this article was written. This article is *four* years old, and the option to "display as folder" was not introduced to OSX until 2 years ago. Thanks.

You could do the same process and when you right click on the folder on your dock, the whole list while come up, Then go to the "Display As" Tab and under it is says Display as and then there will be a check mark against Stack. What you do is just above stack is Display as folder. Check that and it should work.

@Caman

Note that this tip is 4 years old, and the option to "view as folder" did not exist at the time.

The option was added to Snow Leopard 2 years ago. Thanks.

@sg

The reason why this was necessary was because what you were actually putting in the dock were considered "STACKS," not folders. Technically, it's not a "flaw" per see, because Apple wanted you to only be able to put STACKS in the dock, not "folders." The stacks are displaying "correctly," so this was never a "flaw."

However, this whole point is moot now, since there's been an option to display your folders AS FOLDERS for quite some time in Snow Leopard. This "workaround" is actually fairly dated. You can easily see that option by right clicking on any folder you put into your dock.

Why doesn't the dock just show the icon of the folder that you choose? You can always change the icon to anything using 'get info' then replacing the icon. Using an extra folder is quite cumbersome. Nice idea to get around a flaw.
