With iPhoto open and active, click on the Time Machine icon on the dock, and you will be able to browse your backed up iPhoto photos! You can restore individual photos, albums, or restore the entire library. Backup source (ex. External Drive) must be mounted and available.

Does this only work with the iPhoto from iLife ’08? Because it doesn’t seem to work with my iPhoto (from iLife ’06)…

  3. Rafael Says:

Not sure, but I’m inclined to think that one needs iLife ’08 if it does not work with the ’06 version. Mine came with my MacBook. I haven’t used Time Machine with any other versions of iLife.

    Hi,
I have iphoto 9 and I’m trying to restore a single picture from my time machine backup. I open iphoto as directed above, then enter the time machine. When I try and select a previous backup, time machine keeps moving to the next backup window, and on and on. I never get to the point where I can actually browse and restore the photo. Is this a time machine issue or user error :(

  8. James Says:

Rick, you know what, I just tried to replicate your iPhoto issue with Time Machine, you are right. I can’t get the photo’s to restore one at a time! Updating this post now with a little vid I did.. James

  9. Ron Says:

In iPhoto, Click Edit>Browse Backups, then select the items to restore

  10. DAT Says:

Works for me with iLife 09.
navigated through the backup to find the deleted picture. clicked it, then hit restore, picture is reimported into iphoto as a new import.

Any modifications that had been done are not bought back – you have to do them all again.

So now we all now that there is a bug, how do we ACTUALLY restore iPhoto files from Time Machine. I fail to see an update or link…

Can someone please help? I have just lost my whole iPhoto library….

  12. Richard Sims Says:

    Two important facts:
    1. Always keep in mind that iPhoto has its own Trash. If you’ve lost a photo, it may be in there – which is where you should look first, before embarking upon a restoral expedition. Follow the recovery operation documented in iPhoto Help.
    2. Apple has changed the restoral procedure, as noted in iPhoto Help and Article HT4927. For recent iPhoto releases, Time Machine restoral of photos is no longer performed within iPhoto, but outside it.
