So Stacks are cool, and they show you what’s in the folder, but only the last added item (for Downloads) or based on your sort preference for others.
So what about a cool icon, and also a nice stack of the contents? You got it! Whatever you have at the front should be dated a long way into the future to ensure it stays at the front. To do this you can use a utility like FileBuddy, A Better Finder Attributes or some such.
Or if you know how, use the ‘touch’ command in the terminal. Or if not, type “man touch” to find out how. Want some cool icons to have at the front? Well, start here with some great transparent folder icons provided by a Japanese blogger. They even come pre-dated a long way into the future. Enjoy!

The Way To Have The Icons That You Like In Front Is To Make A New Folder Using Get Info Copy Paste. Or Put A Picture In The Folder In That Stack And Make That Picture Or Folder The First Item Using The Number 1 or Something That Will Make It Take That Placement ( Example For Desktop Files I Used A Picture Of Desktop Named It 1 Desktop )
It Should Work Until They Find A Fix Or Send A Update For This

Ernest, Your solution will only work if you have your stack set up to display in alphabetical order. This makes the download stack difficult to manage, where date order makes life easier!

i made it work. here is one way to do it. you double click on the drawers icon in the folder when you are in the icon or list view. i suppose it could work in cover flow but i have not tried that yet. then drag the appropriate icon and drag it to the stack and voila you have a stack “ICON”
