Nick over at macrumors offered me this spaces trick:

“While in the Spaces screen, holding down Shift while dragging a window to a different space will cause it to keep its position on the screen.”

I tried it, and it’s cool!

Spaces rocks. It’s going to change the way many people multitask. The one “oddity” those who have played with it have likely found is that selecting the Finder by clicking in the Dock or pressing Alt-Tab will whisk you away to another space with a Finder window already open, assuming there isn’t already one in the current space.Since many find it useful to keep Finder windows pertinent to their enclosing spaces around, we need a good way to create a new Finder window in the current space. There are a few ways to do this:

  • A simple solution to this, of course, is to click on the Desktop to focus the Finder, and press Command-N. If you’re like me, however, the Desktop is hidden at least once over, even with Spaces.
  • Another option is to Control-Click on the Finder in the Dock and select “New Finder Window.” This is nice as it opens at your preferred default, but it takes two clicks, which is annoying.
  • A final alternative, and my personal preference, is to take advantage of the “Reveal in Finder” functionality of the Dock. By Command-Clicking on any application or stack, you will invoke a finder window focused on (but not open at) it.

If you drag a window close to the edge of your screen, it will switch over to the next Space.

Here’s a really neat trick for those of you who like to have a certain app on all of your spaces.

Go into your spaces prefs, add an app to to the “application assignments” section. Choose “Every Space” next to the app and from now on when you launch a particular application it will follow you to each space you navigate to. Excellent for iChat or Skype!

Firstly, welcome to leopardtricks.com going live, right now, this minute, this second, on the 30th of October 2007! *applaud*

Okay, we all know there’s some cool new features in Leopard that just blow our minds. One of them is “spaces”. Now the “spaces” concept has been around for years on other *nix based operating systems, especially in XF86. “Spaces” in Leopard basically allows you to setup virtual desktops that you can switch between. Kind of like having virtual monitors or displays plugged into your mac with applications sitting on each display!

Try it! Press F8 to start spaces (or Fn-F8). Boom! Neat huh? You can click on a space to start working within, and load apps as you desire. You can open spaces at any time.

Now for some neat tricks. Say you have apps in various spaces, and you want to bring all the apps into one single space. Activate spaces then press “C”. Instantly your apps collect into one space! cool. Or what about combining spaces and expose`? Activate spaces then press F9 (or Fn-F9) and bingo, you can view all applications at once, in each space, in one hit. Click on the app in whichever space you like to go directly to that application!
