Some sites have popup’s that open a new browser window when browsing their site. Annoying, and you can block it. But what about web apps or sites that have legit pop up windows? You can open these windows in tabs instead!
To set this up, open Terminal and type in the following:
defaults write com.apple.Safari TargetedClicksCreateTabs -bool true
Hit enter and quit Safari. When restarting Safari, your windows will open in tabs instead!
To revert back, in Termina, type:
defaults write com.apple.Safari TargetedClicksCreateTabs -bool false
Quit Safari and restart…

THANK YOU! I keep thinking that Apple will add this feature to the preferences with each update to Safari, but to no avail. This is just what I was looking for

I’ve become rather irritated with Command+Click to open everything in new tabs instead of new windows. This tip just made my day! Thank you so much!

Doesn’t seem to work for javascript “fullwin” links…like so:
javascript:FullWin_Dialog(‘../discussion/stuff’)
